It’s officially swim season...the pools are open!
Swimming during the warm months is always a must activity w/ Mi Mi, but hair worries are always on my mind.
Regualr exposure to chlorine makes anyone at risk of chlorine damage. So here are some extra precautions that you can take to prevent and care for chlorine damage.
Regualr exposure to chlorine makes anyone at risk of chlorine damage. So here are some extra precautions that you can take to prevent and care for chlorine damage.
Before swim…
Wear a swim cap
First option is to wear a swim cap. Now i know this is not always the option of chose seeing that some caps dont exactly fit snug to our heads. Weathe you wear one or not is completly up to you.
If you choose to opt out the swim cap idea...Saturate your hair with water before you get in the pool.
Saturating your hair with water will prevent your hair from soaking up as much chlorine. i would suggest adding an oil (Coconut oil) as a barrier to protect from penetrating while swimming. I would also wear some kind of protective hair style ie..braid, plait, twist or bun.
Rinse
After you are done swimming rinse your hair, rinse again, and then rinse again. this will be the first step in removing the chlorine from your hair. *if you're out all day it might even be a good idea to rinse in between to flush as much chlorine as possible. After swim…
Shampoo
shampoo your hair immediately after swimming. There are ‘swimmer shampoos’ that you can buy to use. Using a clarifying shampoo at least once a month will do just as good.If you know you will be swimming often, you may want to do a Co-wash instead and just cleanse your scalp with shampoo. You dont want to dry out your hair with excessive shampooing.
Conditioning
conditioning after every swim is very important. This will assure that mositure is getting back into your hair. You may want to also up your deep conditon at least once or twice a week.Protein
If you are relaxed or have chemically treated hair a protein treatment is a must! Those of us that have chemically treated hair are at a higher risk of damage. Doing a protein treatment once or twice a month will keep your hair strong during the swimming months.
Styling
As far as styling goes i would just keep it simple...the less maluplution the better. Braids, twist, and buns are a good way to go.
All in all protect your hair and have fun swimming...i know Mi Mi will!
