Mommy's Poetic Justice Braids

Just as Mi Mi i also have been wanting some braids in my hair. What better time to do it after Winter Break; one less thing to do getting back into the swing of a routine.

To create these braids i used the exact same product as Mi Mi's twist:

Pre-Poo Pompeian oil (under drier for 15 minutes)

Shampoo TRESemme` KERATIN SMOOTH  SHAMPOO

Deep Conditioner TRESemme` KERATIN SMOOTH  CONDITIONER&

        (under dryer for 20 minutes)

Silk Elements Olive Heat Protection Spay To protect hair as a blow dried 

awapuhi ginger PENETRATING OIL Applied after hair was blow dried
Urban Beauty Super-Silky Jumbo Braid Hair (i used 7 packs)

ARGAN OIL ECO Styler Gel To lay down fly-a-ways as braiding and smooth edges

Pompeian oil Applied to scalp after braids where completed

Total time to braid: 6 hours

Senegalese Twist

Mi Mi has been asking me to braid up her hair for some time now so...

To create these braids i used:

Two-Strand Twist

For this style Mi Mi and i got into a little color. Instead of the normal black (1B) i used 1B/30. At the start i kinda second guess the color for Mi Mi but she said she liked the color, so we went w/ it.
















To prepare for this style i started w/ freshly washed hair. After her hair was cleansed i sprayed some Silk Elements Olive Heat Protection Spay on her entire head and blow dried it on a cool setting using a paddle brush. Once her hair was completely dried i applied some Organic Root Stimulator Olive Oil Moisturizing Lotion  and EVCO  on her hair. I then sectioned and a began creating the twist using the braid-in method. Through out each twist i applied ARGAN OIL ECO Styler Gel as needed to each twist to lay down any fly a ways. For the ends i used the hot water method and perm rods.

The entire style took me about 3 hours. I used 3 1/2 packs. 

Overall i was pleased w/ the style. The color actually looked good on her. And Mi Mi really likes it. We may just use this color again.

Best way to wash Braids

One of our FB friends Kenya posted this question on our FB page.

Great question Kenya!

The best way to wash your hair while you are wearing braids is...wash them the same way you would usually wash your hair but w/ a little twist.

[1] Start by using your normal shampoo. The twist begins here...you must dilute the shampoo w/ water.
*The purpose to diluting is so that it will be easier to distribute and rinse out the product. I would suggest using an applicator bottle as well...1 part shampoo...2 parts water. Squeeze the shampoo between the braids.
*twist: DO NOT manipulate hair by massaging in shampoo as usual. This is why i suggest using the applicator bottle.

[2] Follow up w/ a liquid conditioner; diluting it as well.

[3] Next, I would do an Apple Cider Vinegar rinse using 1 part ACV to 4 parts water. This will remove any remaining residue and prevent any product build up.

[4] Rinse w/ cool water by tilting head back and letting the water run off hair. (no manipulating!) The cool water will close the hair shaft...keeping all the moisture in.

[5] Blot w/ a cotton t-shirt

[6] Apply a liquid leave-in, then seal w/ a light oil.

[7] Tie a scarf around edges & let air dry. This will reduce any frizz.

As for dry and itchy hair while in the braids...you can use a braid spray. I would suggest a DIY spray. Here are two good one by Black Hair Information.Com.

Twist

Here are the twists i created on Mi Mi's hair after her last wash day. i deiced that due to recent notice of a significant amount of breakage that i was going to do a protective style. Mi Mi has been asking me to twist her hair with extension so, i thought this would be a prefect time.

These twist were created w/ the same Amour New Malibu Kinky Marley Braid hair that i used when i did my Marley Twist. To create the twist i started w/ a 1 to 2 inch parting. i used the braid-in and two stand methods. I only used ECO Styler Gel to smooth her edges and hair while twisting. Other than that i think her hair already had what was needed.

Overall Mi Mi and i were pleased w/ the outcome of the twist.

Quick Box Braids

My sister came to me last night and asked me to do something with her hair. She didn't want anything elaborate just some thing she didn't have to much to.

Currently she has about two inches of new growth. The style was created on clean hair. i created the boxes in a fairly large size. i applied some Softee hair food and MURRAY'S LOC-LOCK GEL to each section for slippage.
i used Kanekalon braiding hair. i didn't really use a specific brand of hair do to the fact that i didn't have more than two kinds of the same hair. (so yes i used different kinds.) For the ends she just dipped them into hot water. i added some Olive oil for moisture and shine.

Braided Updo

Here is the style that was created after Mi Mi's last wash day. It is inspired by a style i found on Pinterest.

The Style is a cornrow updo created on natural hair. Mi Mi and i liked this style and thought we would try it.

Briaded Updo

My  overall thoughts on this style are that i really like it but thought the style looked better on natural hair. To make the style work for Mi Mi i believe that i should of braided a little more hair in the back to leave less hair out in the front.

Even though Mi Mi is 15 weeks post relaxer, i felt as if the full creativity of the style was not shown.

I did in fact liked that it was a great low maintenance style, creative and provided some protection.

K'leyah's B-Day Style

For K'leyahs' birthday this weekend she wanted a simple cornrow style. 

So i created this cute stylish look.

This style was created on detangled stretched hair. It is a simple cornrow style braided with THE SUPERLINE COLLECTION Silky Jumbo Braid Kanekalon hair.

i used gel when needed to blend the braiding hair with K'leyah's hair. The braids are braided to one side to create a stylish look. To finish the look off i applied a hair grease to her scalp to maintain moisture and shine. For the ends, the braids were braided all together then dipped into hot water; giving off a crimped look.

Auntie Kenya's Rope Twist

Auntie Kenya really liked Mi Mi's Rope Twist that she just had to get them.

Auntie Kenya's Rope Twist was created on freshly washed and conditioned hair. i used 2 packs of number 4 Gina Collection 100% Kanekalon Jumbo Braid hair.

To blend the braiding hair in with her hair i applied MURRAY'S LOC-LOCK GEL to the base of each twist.
i started the twist using the braid-in-method but, once i did a few twist i decided that i didn't really care for this method and began doing the invisible root method instead. To me this method looks more natural and the knot or braiding hair isn't showing.

Each twist base was about an 1 1/2 inches in diameter. The length came to her mid back. i applied some EVOO to her scalp and hair for shine and moisture.

For the ends, i used 1/4 inch perm rods dipped into hot water to create the curls.

Twist Review

Mi Mi and i have now had our twist in for about 3 weeks. This weekend is the plan to take down, wash, and create a new style. So, i wanted to give you guys a review on the twist styles.

Mi Mi's Rope Twist

Mi Mi and i really liked these twist. i thought that this was a great protective style. It served the purpose of being care fee for the last few weeks.
Even though i liked these twist i believe there will be a thing or two that i will change for next time.

1. For the hair, i would use Marley Braid hair instead of the Jumbo Braid hair. Throughout the style Mi Mi had a little bit of an issue with hairs unraveling. To solve this i believe that using the Marley Braid hair would help.

~and~

2. i may also may use a hair butter. i found that others used butters to help "lock-in" the twist in addition to the gel. i think this will help with the issue of hairs sticking out as well and the twist to look more smooth and polished.

Mommy's Marley Twist

i enjoyed these twist. i also think this was a great protective style. They were easy to maintain and simply to wear. Like Mi Mi's Rope Twist there are a few things i would change for next time with this style.

1. The Hair

i didn't care to much for the type of hair. i felt as though the hair was kind of rough in texture. When researching on what hair to use,  it seem to be that some like the Marley hair because of the texture. With this hair i just wasn't to crazy about it. Maybe it was the brand? So next time i believe i will try a different brand.

2. Size of twist

Now i know that the for this style the size of these twist are suppose to be big and chunky (which is the reason i loved them so much) but i felt as though they could have been a slight bit smaller for me.

 3. Weight of twist

I had a tad-bit-of an issue with the twist being a little bit to heavy. I'm not sure if this was due to the hair or the size of the twist. This really wasn't that big of an issue but, i did notice the slight difference. 

Mi Mi & i enjoyed both of these twist styles and we will definitely be wearing this style again!

Mommy's Marley Twist

To create this look i started by pre-pooing my hair with my mixture of EVCO and EVOO for 40 minutes. i then co-washed my hair with Organix Coconut Milk Conditioner. i then deep conditioned with PALMER'S coconut oil formula 
PROTEIN PACK for 20 minutes. After my hair was completely rinsed i used a cotton t-shirt to remover the excess water and then applied a leave-in concoction. i then let my hair air dry.

The next day, i applied some EVCO and Organic Root Stimulator Olive Oil Moisturizing Lotion to my hair shaft. i then parted my hair in large sections roughly about two inches. Using Amour New Malibu Kinky Marley Braid i used 4 to 5 pieces for each twist. i applied MURRAY'S Loc-Lock Gel  at the base of each twist to have a more finished look. i used the invisible root method to create each twist throughout my entire head. I put the pack of 1B/33 in the back (i wasn't sure about this color try to venture away for just black) and the 1B in the front.

For the ends i used 1/4 inch perm rods dipped into hot water to create the curls.

Rope Twist

To create this look i started by pre-pooing Mi Mi's hair with my mixture of EVCO and EVOO. i then co-washed her hair with Organix Coconut Milk Conditioner. i then deep conditioned with a little bit of Herbal Essences Hello Hydration and PALMER'S coconut oil formula PROTEIN PACK for 30 minutes. After the hair was completely rinsed i used a cotton t-shirt to remover the excess water and then applied a leave-in concoction. i let her hair air dry.

The next morning, i applied some EVCO and Organic Root Stimulator Olive Oil Moisturizing Lotion to her hair shaft. i then parted her hair in about one inch wide and one inch deep sections. Using BOBBI BOSS Jumbo Braid hair applied MURRAY'S LOC-LOCK GEL onto each twist to insure her hair blended. i used the invisible root method to create each twist throughout her entire head. 

For the ends i used small perm rods (5/16 inch) dipped into hot water to create the curls.

Mi Mi loves this style. She can't keep her hand out of it. ♥

Box Braids w/ Friends

This past week and a half was a busy week for hair. Some little friends wanted to rock some box braids. So who else to do them but me . So here they are.

Asiya
Asiya is 12 years old. She is all natural. Her hair type i believe is a 3C. Asiya wanted simple box braids that weren't to big. Her boxes were about 1 1/2 inches in width. The braids came down in length to the top of her back and the ends were curled. She really liked her hair. Its a good look on her!

Taylor

Taylor is 8 years old. She is natural as well. Her hair type I believe is a 3B. Taylor wanted simple box braids also. I didn't want Taylors' to be to small so i did hers boxes about 2 to 2 1/4 inches in width. The braids came down in length to her mid back and her ends were also curled. These braids make her look different but they are still cute!

K'leyah

K'leyah 9 years old. She also is all natural. Her hair type is an 4A but a very soft curl. Boy does this girl have a lot of hair! With that being said i didn't want to make her boxes to big so they were about a 1/2 to 1 inch in width. The braids came just passed her shoulders. The ends mom decided to burn them and later curl them. She looks older with these braids but still cute!

 For all the braids I used Kanekalon jumbo braid hair from Gina Collection.
